First Aid is an invaluable skill which enables people both young and old to offer assistance to those in peril. The mantra associated with First Aid is ‘preserve and prolong’ meaning to preserve and prolong life. Sometimes the first small actions done within the first few moments of an accident happening can make all the difference. Cadets and First Aid go hand in hand in offering both a service to the community and ACF, but also a personal achievement of gaining a qualification and developing your character.
First Aid is a mandatory module in the APC syllabus for 2 Star. There are two to three weekends a year dedicated to gaining First Aid qualifications. The First Aid Training Team’s aim is to make First Aid training as interesting as possible, and sometimes cadets and adults visiting Nesscliffe on one of our weekends have trouble deciding if what they see is real or not! We use a mixture of lectures, DVD’s, Power Point, and mostly practical sessions, with very realistic casualty simulation to deliver our courses.

When cadets reach 16 they can opt to complete a First Aid at Work qualification. All courses are at minimum cost; usually the normal weekend price plus a small charge for workbooks.

Adults can gain the St John Adult First Aid qualification, or First Aid at Work. It is advised that all adults complete one of the First Aid courses which last for three years.
Also Frimley Park holds week long First Aid courses for adults on a tri-annual basis, the courses are split into three levels and qualify adults in either First Aid at Work, Advanced First Aid, or First Aid Trainer. The latter course utilises a recognised teaching qualification known as Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector, or PTLLS.
It is advised that all cadets carry a personal First Aid kit, and qualified adults and cadets should have an adequate First Aid kit for most eventualities. Each person will have different requirements but the following is generally considered to be the minimum standard:
•2-4 dressings, various sizes
•2-4 Gauze pads
•Triangular bandages (not just useful for slings!)
•Various plasters
•Gloves (non latex)min 2 pairs
•Micropore tape
•Safety Pins
•Safety Scissors
•If you have space, conforming bandages (for sprains) ice packs, eye dressings and a small eye wash can be very handy, but not always necessary.
More information is available on the St John website or in the Dorling Kindersley First Aid Manual (9th edition) which is readily available in most bookshops, or enquiries can be made through any of the First Aid Training Team.

Every year we participate in the Brigade First Aid Competition. The rules are simple; a team is made up of four cadets under the age of eighteen, who should each hold a recognised First Aid Certificate. The Competition is based on a team event lasting ten minutes, in which there is usually two casualties, and an individual event lasting four minutes, which each team member participates in.
If you are interested in being put forward for the county teams please ask your Det Comd to contact the relevant CFATA. There is also a competition for young adults aged 17 – 24, which can be comprised of cadets or adults.
